The Leaf Float

The spiritual meaning of floating came to me as a poem.

Late summer.
A long, slow float on the pool.

Nothing to carry.
Nothing to steer.

I was so completely relaxed
I forgot I was a person
and became a leaf.

Held.
Carried.
Perfectly supported by water
that never once asked me to try.

Love is not a push.
Love is a float.

The Spiritual Meaning of Floating

Floating is one of the few things we can only do by not doing. The moment you try to float, you sink a little. The moment you let go, the water rises to meet you.

That is the spiritual meaning of floating as I lived it that afternoon: support was never something I had to earn. The water was holding me before I lay back on it, and it kept holding me whether I noticed or not. In the same way, Love is already holding all of us. It isn’t waiting for us to get it right, work harder, or steer better. It simply carries.

A leaf doesn’t strategize its way down the stream. It doesn’t worry whether it’s floating correctly. It rests in what it is, and in that rest it is moved exactly where it needs to go. The Psalmist describes the one whose “leaf also shall not wither,” and I think that’s the secret: we prosper not by pushing, but by being planted in Love and letting Love do the carrying.

So here’s an invitation for this week. Find a moment, in a pool, a bath, a hammock, or simply a chair, and practice the float. Let your shoulders drop. Let your breath slow. Notice what is already holding you.

You don’t have to try. You only have to let yourself be held.

“His leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” — Psalm 1:3
